Battersea and Chelsea Wedding Photography – Arad & Brian

Arad & Brian’s Same-Sex Wedding As a wedding photographer I was delighted to be chosen for Arad and Brian’s same sex wedding, as a result of being found on Instagram by Arad.  Arad a keen photographer and lover of photography himself knew he wanted a very candid and storytelling approach to his and Brian’s wedding day – and it was my natural wedding reportage photography on Instagram that led him to me.  The wedding was going to be split between the wonderful Pump House in Battersea Park and at the cool Bluebird Restaurant on the Kings Road in Chelsea.  As a London documentary wedding photographer they really were London wedding venues I dream of shooting at. The three of us met up over a beer at a pub just off the Kings Road in Chelsea and we immediately hit it off. I’m a firm believer in working with those couples I know I will get on with and who want a non-nonsense approach to their wedding photography.  I really enjoyed the guys company, so I …

5 Great Litter Free Alternatives To Confetti On Your Wedding Day

Throwing confetti at the happy wedding couple is one of the great wedding traditions.  It’s said to date back to Ancient Egypt where it was believed showering the just married couple with seeds would bestow the gift of great fertility upon them. However, as great as confetti is, and as a wedding photographer I do love to document those fabulous confetti showers, it does leave behind bit of a mess for someone to clean up afterwards.  For that reason, a lot of wedding venues have strict restrictions on the use of confetti. But don’t worry, there are some great litter free alternatives to confetti, which mean you can still keep some kind of tradition for the exiting the wedding service.  So to help you out here are my 5 great litter free alternatives to confetti for your wedding day. #1 Blowing Bubbles No, that’s not number one in my list because I’m a West Ham United fan and always forever blowing bubbles, but bubble really can be fun and also offer some eye catching wedding …

Morning bridal preparations in Kislingbury, Northamptonshire, as a newborn baby is fed.

Why I Love This Image: The Mothers & The Babies

A Reportage Wedding Photographer As a reportage wedding photographer it’s not always the big moments I’m looking to document on the wedding day.  Sometimes it’s those little details that can also say much and form such a touching part of the wedding story. This image from Lois and Phil’s wedding in Northamptonshire a few years back is a great example of how being alert to seemingly insignificant details can give you a powerful statement – and that is such an important part of a storytelling approach to wedding photography. The Bridal Preparations in Northamptonshire During the wedding morning’s bridal preparations, Lois was sat with Emily (whose own wedding to Lois’s brother Phil I shot a year later) one of her bridesmaids and who had recently given birth to her first child.  In fact, the birth was so close to Lois’ wedding that it was touch and go for a short while as to whether she’d make the day as a bridesmaid at all. Of course, on it’s own, it would have made for a sweet …

An abstract wedding photo of the couple's first dance at Waltham Abbey in Essex

Why I Love This Image: The Abstract First Dance

As an award winning wedding photographer, and active member of the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (AGWPJA), I’m always looking to capture things a little differently, more creatively when I photograph a wedding. Creative Wedding Photography This image, from Annique and Lee’s wedding at Waltham Abbey in Essex, is a good example of how you don’t always have to have everything in focus to capture a beautiful wedding photograph. Having already captured the coupe’s first dance, I was looking to do something more unique.  I’ve always been a big fan of abstract photography – one of my early photographic influences was the abstract expressionist photographer Aaron Siskind – so as gold tinsel fell above the couple, merging with the swirling disco lights I decided to see how it would work out of focus. Of course, all those glorious colours and lovely bokeh mixing together really created something quite beautiful.  Whilst the couple are out of focus you can still make them out and visualise what is happening. Abstract Wedding Photography I love that …

10 Great Tips for Wedding Toasts

As a wedding photographer I’ve seen and heard a lot of wedding toasts and speeches in my time. Some good, some bad and a few that were exceptional.  So I definitely think I’m pretty well placed to give a few tips and advice on how to deliver a great wedding toast.  I previously posted about when to do the wedding speeches, but here I’ll tell you more about wedding toasts and how to deliver them. History of Wedding Toasts It’s been argued that wedding toasts date all the way back to the 6th century BC. Glasses would be raised and clinked – causing the contents to spill into one another’s vessels, a reassurance that the drink wasn’t poisoned.  This is most probably what the phrase “good health” comes from. The wedding link would come from the old tradition of warring tribes and conflicts being ended by marriages between clans – and thus toasting was then a reassurance of peace on all sides. The term ‘toast’ itself was first coined by Shakespeare in the Merry Wives …

Simple and Straight Forward Wedding Photography Prices

As a London wedding photographer, who covers the whole of the UK and destination weddings overseas, I believe in offering a straightforward and simple pricing structure for my wedding photography prices.  This I believe matches my straightforward storytelling approach to documentary wedding photography. In the past I have offered a number of different wedding photography packages – which included lots of different types of options – intended to provide wedding photography for different budgets. However, I found these often confused potential wedding couples or couples would then want to change contents of the packages. So I’ve taken the decision to do away with wedding photography packages and simply offer two straightforward wedding fees that cover the entire wedding day without the need to tailor anything further. For a full day’s coverage – which is usually from 2 hours before the ceremony time through to at least an hour after the first dance – including the traditional portraits and group shots then my fee is £1250.00. However, if you want a pure documentary wedding photography approach …

Dorset Wedding Photography – Ellie & James

The Wedding Day in Ferndown, Hampreston and Stapehill I came to be the wedding photographer for Ellie and James’ wedding down in Dorset simply because James is the son of Steve – who is often my second photographer when I require one at weddings.  So it was one of those rare occasions where I was meeting the bride and groom for the first time on the wedding day itself. Bridal Preparations in Ferndown, Dorset I spent the evening before the wedding at a hotel in Bournemouth.  So I was suitably fresh and ready when I arrived to document Ellie’s bridal preparations in Ferndown, which is about 8 miles outside of Bournemouth. When I arrived, the bridal party were sat down enjoying an appetizing full English breakfast, prepared by Barry the father-of-the-bride, which looked and smelled delicious – and had my stomach rumbling before I even started. Whilst they finished off breakfast I was able to associate myself with the family’s pet dogs, who were taking a very inquisitive interested in this stranger who had turned …

London Engagement Shoot – Anne & Alex

From Vauxhall to Pimlico: A Modern European Love Story A few months back I had the pleasure and honour of shooting Anne and Alex’s engagement photography around Vauxhall and Pimlico in London.  However, their love story actually started 4 years before this in a ruined bar called Szimpla in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. With Anne being Finnish and Alex the quintessential Englishman, theirs is truly a modern European love story that crosses borders. Vauxhall & I What immediately struck me about Anne and Alex was their down to earth and fun nature.  This was a couple relaxed in one another’s company, who were easy going and didn’t want too much fuss.  In many ways this is exactly the kind of couples I find are drawn to my relaxed and unobtrusive approach to documentary photography. So the plan was very an engagement shoot that was was fairly low key, fun and relaxed.  With the sun shining we headed up onto the Vauxhall Bridge, which provides a beautiful downstream view of the Thames and London’s South …

A beautiful rural wedding in Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire

Gemma & Chris’ do-it-yourself backyard wedding in the heart of England Yes, I’m still catching up on a number of previous weddings here on my blog.  When Gemma married Chris it was a truly beautiful day on what I can only describe as an archetypal rural English wedding in pretty Northamptonshire. I’ve actually known Chris for almost 30 years now, although we hadn’t really seen much of one another in the last 15 years or so.  So it was an absolute honour and thrill to be asked to document his and Gemma’s wedding in the village of Nether Heyford – where Chris had spent his childhood growing up and still a community he has very strong ties to. So I knew it was going to be a very special wedding day. Bridal Preparations at home in Abington, Northampton My day started early, as it usually does, turning up at the couple’s home in Abington, Northampton where Gemma and her bridal party were preparing for the wedding day ahead.  As is always the way with bridal …

Colour documentary wedding photography of male wedding guests enjoying cigars, during the evening reception at Highdown Vineyard in Ferring, West Sussex.

Why I Love This Image: Groomsmen, Cigars & a Toy Lens

To be honest, there are lots of things I love about this image from Crystal & Dom’s Highdown Vineyard wedding in West Sussex. It was early evening, during the wedding reception, and the warm summer sun was setting on the Sussex countryside.  A number of the groomsmen and male wedding guests had sneaked outside to enjoy a celebratory wedding cigar. At the time I was experimenting with a new lens on one of my cameras, and a plastic toy lens at that! Made by SLRMagic and near on a 50mm field of view, it’s a lens that gives a quirky and imperfect view of the world.  In many ways it’s the closest I’ve come to an old film analogue look on a digital camera – without any post processing that is. There was definitely a real retro and timeless vibe to the scene, which was perfectly enhanced by the toy lens.  This is really helped by the central standing male, sparking up his cigar, and with a vintage look straight out of the TV historical …

Award winning street photographer DArren Lehane

Award-Winning Street Photographer

Award-Winning Street Photography Wedding Photographer Yes, it’s now officially announced…I’m one of the winners of the International Street Photography 2016 competition – run by PDN in conjunction with publishers Acuity Press. As a result of being one of the winners I will be featured in a book curated and published by renowned photography historian and curator Mr Colin Westerbeck. To be chosen by Westerbeck, including other judges such as the legend that is Alex Webb, is extremely flattering and humbling. The Creative Engine That Drives My Documentary Wedding Photography As I’ve often said, my passion for candid street photography is very much the creative engine that informs and drives my natural documentary approach to wedding photography.  To be awarded by such legends, not just in street and documentary photography, but photography as a whole, demonstrates how seriously I take my work. Lots of photographers talk about passion – but few actually demonstrate it. For me, passion is an action, not a word. It’s taken my well over a decade of going out on the streets, …

Battersea Park Pre-Wedding Photography Shoot – Arad and Brian

Battersea Park – the ideal pre-wedding location As a London wedding photographer I’ve always thought that Battersea Park, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, is one of the most interesting of London parks, so I was thrilled when Arad and Brian asked me to photograph their same sex wedding in the park next month.  I was even more excited when they said they wanted their pre-wedding shoot to also take place in Battersea Park too.  It is such a beautiful park with so many great photographic backdrops, so I knew it was going to be an absolutely fantastic shoot. It was an absolutely gorgeous spring day for the shoot.  The sun was still warm and shining when the guys arrived late afternoon, fresh from wedding shopping earlier in the day.  We met at the Pear Tree cafe in the park and had a brief catch up before talking through what to expect with the shoot. Natural and Candid Pre-Wedding Photography The reason that Arad and Brian had booked me for their wedding was due to …

Highdown Vineyard Wedding Photographer – Crystal and Dom

As a wedding photographer I’m so lucky to visit so many beautiful wedding venues around the country.  Highdown Vineyard, nestled cosily on the slopes of the South Downs, in-between Worthing and Littlehampton in West Sussex, is easily one of the most beautiful.  I also count myself very fortunate to have photographed a number of weddings at Highdown. So when I met up with Crystal and Dom, 6 months earlier on a cold grey day in south west London, and they told me they were having their wedding reception at Highdown Vineyard, I knew I had to be their wedding photographer. A Sussex Wedding Photographer In fact, the reason Crystal and Dom had contacted me about being their wedding photographer was because they had seen some of my previous Highdown Vineyard wedding photography whilst visiting this most beautiful West Sussex wedding venue. So once they had booked me, I couldn’t wait for their wedding day to come around.  And when the day came around I definitely wasn’t disappointed.  The sun was shining beautifully and I found …

Littleton House Wedding Photography – Chloe & Dan – Back in the Day

Another year, another 1st wedding anniversary.  Yes, today a year ago I was shooting Chloe and Dan’s wedding at Littleton House at Shepperton Studios in Surrey. Having been up in Northamptonshire the day before, to shoot Amy and Mark’s wedding, it was down to a Surrey wedding venue much closer to home for Chloe and Dan’s big day.  As a couple they had been really keen on my storytelling documentary approach to their wedding story, so again it was a wedding I was massively looking forward to. A Unique Surrey Wedding Venue Littleton House is a unique manor house wedding venue that, rather unusually, sits within the famous Shepperton film studios in Surrey.  This alone makes it one of the most interesting wedding venues in Surrey.  It’s not many brides who can say they got married where parts of films – such as Harry Potter, Love Actually, Bridget Jones’ Diary, The Princess Bride and the Da Vinci Code – were shot! So Chloe and Dan were definitely in esteemed company as they celebrated their wedding …

London engagement shoot of the couple cuddling beneath Waterloo Bride, on the Embankment, London. Taken by one of London's best wedding photographers, Darren Lehane.

London Engagement Shoot – South Bank & the Embankment – Hannah & Tim

It was an absolute pleasure to undertake a London engagement shoot with Hannah and Tim, down by the Thames a few weeks ago.  As a London wedding photographer I absolute love shooting in and around central London, as there are so many fabulous settings and locations that it makes more formal engagement portraits a complete joy to shoot. As I like to get as many different settings into engagement photography session as possible, we had settled on a number of backdrops to include Bankside, the South Bank, Waterloo Bridge and the Embankment.  This gives the couple a variety in the photos they receive. A Cold Breeze Beside the River Although the spring sun was shining brightly when we met near the Oxo Tower, on Bankside, there was a cold breeze – especially by the exposed River Thames – which meant fly away hair was bit of an issue during the shoot, well more for Hannah than either Tim or myself! But as I always say, you can never guarantee any kind of weather on your …

Dodmoor House Wedding Photography – Back in the Day

Wow! A year ago today I was photographing my Amy and Mark’s wonderful wedding at the delightful Dodmoor House in Northamptonshire. Where does the time go?  I still remember the day as if it was only yesterday. Documentary Wedding Photographer Amy and Mark were a brilliant couple to work with, who bought into the whole concept of a more natural and relaxed storytelling approach to wedding photography.  There was so much emotion and many genuine moments on the day, that it made my job as their documentary wedding photographer easy and straightforward! Dodmoor House – Northamptonshire Wedding Venue Dodmoor House is definitely one of Northamptonshire’s best wedding venues. A Grade II listed barn conversion, set beside the Grand Union Canal in the heart of the beautiful Northants countryside, its a perfect backdrop to any couple’s wedding day. Happy 1st Wedding Anniversary So, I’d love to take this opportunity to wish Amy and Mark a very happy and loving first wedding anniversary. Here’s to many more years of wonderful memories together. You can see more of …

I will of course keep you updated on more details about the books publication as they become known.  The photos below are from my body of street photography work that will be featured in the book. Gatton Hall Surrey Wedding Photography – Claire and Nick

I first met Claire and Nick in a coffee shop at Clapham Junction railway station in South West London.  One of the first things they said to me was, “we hate posing for photos, we always end up looking like idiots.” For such a handsome couple this was an amusing thing to hear, but as a natural storytelling wedding photographer who prefers to capture real moments – rather than over pose or set up wedding photos – it was music to my ears. The couple were getting married at Gatton Hall near Mertsham in Surrey, but the morning started off at Claire’s parents home near Leatherhead in Surrey, for the usual bridal preparations.  As always there was plenty of excitement as the girls got ready and as Claire is a producer with a well known TV property show she was able to call in colleagues to film the day too. I was also impressed to discover that Claire’s dad was also a former professional football player for Exeter City – and his finest moment coming …

Wedding photojournalosm at South Lodge hotel in Horsham, West Sussex

South Lodge Horsham Wedding Photography Anniversary

What I loved most about Kelly and Ryan’s special day were the emotions that ran through the day. Being a Sussex documentary wedding photography I love capturing all those real moments and genuine emotions that make up a wedding story. There was certainly no shortage of that on Kelly and Ryan’s day.

Why I Love This Image: Wiping Away The Tear

Weddings are often occasions of conflicting emotions. From tears to laughter, quite reflection through to shaking your moves on the dancefloor the wedding day usually has it all.

LGBT wedding photography of the brides during their same sex wedding, in the Old Court House in Kingston - one of the best wedding venues in Surrey. Taken by London documentary wedding photography Darren Lehane.

Kingston Old Court House Wedding Photography – Michelle and Sally

Michelle and Sally’s same sex wedding was a fun and delightful mix of home comforts in New Malden and a historic wedding venue in Kingston, Surrey. I arrived at their home in New Malden in the morning to find Sally preparing flowers, whilst workman were putting the finishing touches to a small marquee in their back garden, which would host the wedding reception later in day.  Michelle, who is South African, also had family from South Africa staying with them – so there was a definite busy and cosmopolitan air to the morning preparations. Both the brides-to-be seemed remarkably relaxed ahead of their, even with more and more family and friends arriving at their New Malden home.  It was already clear that the wedding was going to be a fairly relaxed and informal affair. The wedding ceremony itself took place at the delightful Old Court House which is part of the Guildhall in Kingston. With its wood paneling and high benches it definitely made for a grand wedding setting.  It’s no surprise its one of …

Why I Love This Image: The Raw Emotion

There’s lots of names for the style of wedding photography I undertake: wedding photojournalism, documentary wedding photography, wedding reportage photography, candid wedding photography and natural wedding photography to name but a few.
