A beautiful and stunning Sussex wedding venue. Perfect for anyone’s wedding day!
As a wedding photographer who is lucky enough to cover Sussex (amongst other places), I get to shoot at many fantastic and picturesque wedding venues. The beautiful South Lodge Country House Hotel, near Horsham in West Sussex, is definitely no exception.
So when Kelly and Ryan asked me to be their wedding photographer there I just I was going to get many fantastic wedding photos, helped by such a stunning Sussex wedding venue. I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
Located on the edges of the beautiful South Downs National Park, the South Lodge is a luxurious Country House style hotel situated in 93 acres of grounds – that include lakes, woodlands and even a “secret garden” (more about later.) Although it was only early Spring when Kelly and Ryan got married there, there was already beautiful flowers blooming on the steps of the garden terrace – such a great location for group shots during the wedding day.
The hotel itself is a mixture of old and new – the main part of the hotel tastefully extended by newer, more modern wings. On entering the main reception you definitely get the feel of traditional country estate feel that will definitely leave wedding guests wondering if Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple will check in at any moment.
For Kelly’s wedding day, her bridal party were checked into the Evelyn Room – a stunning bridal suite with breath-taking views of the South Lodge’s spectacular grounds. Having two aspects it ensures the room is bathed in lots of natural and airy light – perfect for wedding photography. The room was big and spacious and a luxurious bathroom that meets all the needs of even the most demanding bridal party – not that Kelly’s was! Her bridal preparations were amongst the most calm and relaxed I have had the pleasure to photograph.
The wedding ceremony took place in the Wordsworth Room, a traditional wood panelled room, again with lots of natural light and enough space for up to 130 guests. With the beautiful gardens visible via the large windows it’s truly a wonderful setting for anyone’s wedding ceremony.
As I mentioned earlier, the garden terraces are a great place for traditional and posed portraits, as well as a place for guests to gather and mingle – preferably with a drink in one hand and a canapé in the other. For those wedding couples who want their portraits a little more private and intimate, there’s a wonderful tree swing set away from the hotel and near to a small lake.
However, there is also an area known as the “Secret Garden” which is located around the front of the hotel, hidden from view by bushes and trees – and filled with rockeries and a cascading water feature. It really is a fantastic and secret spot to have some quite and intimate wedding portraits taken. If you ask nicely, a member of the hotel staff will drive you there on a gold cart – which can be quite an exhilarating experience in itself!
The wedding breakfast and evening reception all take place again in the Wordsworth Room – which is beautiful laid out with table details and a dance floor for all the shakers and movers in the evening.
So I can safely say that the South Lodge hotel is one of the most beautiful Sussex wedding venues I have had the pleasure to photograph a wedding at. So if you are looking for a wedding venue in Sussex, then definitely check out the South Lodge.
